Malta context

What the published rules say

A summary of current Identità guidance. Rules and deadlines can change, so the practice confirms the current position for your matter.

  • Who applies

A Single Permit combines residence and employment permission. Ordinary applications are submitted by the prospective employer rather than directly by the worker.

  • After a job ends

A Single Permit holder whose employment ends generally has an initial 30-day period to seek alternative employment, with a possible further 30 days subject to the stated conditions.

  • Changing employer

Identità provides a Change of Employer route for Single Permit holders, and changes of designation can affect a permit.

  • Refusals

Single Permit refusals can be appealed to the Immigration Appeals Board, subject to the applicable deadline. Refused, revoked or annulled visas have a formal appeal process.

  • Before arrival

First-time Single Permit cases are subject to pre-departure requirements, and Jobsplus and Identità requirements apply to the employment of third-country nationals.

  • EU nationals

EU nationals may work without a work permit, but employment must be registered with Jobsplus. An EU national who loses employment and wishes to stay may need to change their basis to jobseeker and register with Jobsplus.
